Jackie, I live in Fairlight and commuted daily to London via Hastings, the train journey is in the order of 1h 40m to Charing Cross. From Rye you would have to get either to Hastings or to Ashford, then from Ashford I would estimate another 1h 40m. Either route would cause you about a six hour commute. I now drive to Stokenchurch in Buckinghamshire once a week and can confirm that the M25 is as bad as ever. I would expect your husband to endure at least two hours either way. Rye is a beautiful place, but is not for the daily commuter. Working locally is great but it does not deliver London salaries. A tough call, but it depends on your need to commute for 30 hours to deliver a 37 hour package of work. Of course the above timings are all best case! I am not being negative, this is a realistic answer to your question from one who has endured it for many years. Dave Rodwell http://www.saxonking,co.uk |

Hi, My husband and I adore Rye and have visited at least once a year for the past 10 years. We would dearly love to move to Rye permanently but I work in London and my husband works in Guildford so we are concerned about the commuting. My husband is learning to drive so the idea is that he will drive between Rye and Guildford, but we don't know whether this is a realistic option (timewise and financially). We currently live in Shoreham By Sea and I commute into London by train which takes approx 2 hours each way. We are basically looking for anyone who lives in Rye and commutes to London and/or Guildford to give us an honest account of what it is like on a day to day basis to help us make up our minds. We dearly want to move to Rye but also need to be realistic so any advice would be really appreciated. Many thanks and counting the days until we are back in August. x |
